what we can see,
what we can’t,
and what we keep.

jaar* · privacy · 2026-09-05

jaar keeps your memories on your own device. If you turn on sync, or open a jar with other people, they travel as ciphertext under a key that never leaves your phone. We cannot read them. This page says exactly what that means, and where its edges are.

what we cannot see

what our server does see

who else touches data

Cloudflare (hosting and storage), Resend (sends the letters — only if you connect email), and your phone’s push service, Apple, Google or Mozilla (only if you turn on notifications). That is the whole list. Data on Cloudflare’s network may be stored outside your country.

what we keep, and for how long

shared jars and reports

A shared jar is a closed room between people who invited each other. Nothing in it is scanned, because nothing in it can be read. What exists instead is a door out: any member can report the jar they are in. The reporter holds the key, so evidence is theirs to give — by choice, never automatically — and the key itself never leaves their device. On a valid report we delete the stored bytes and close the address. Child sexual abuse material is the bright line: deleted immediately, evidence preserved, reported to the authorities.

The whole reasoning, written before any of this was built: jaar.day/POLICY.md. The short terms live inside the app, under settings.

your choices

Stop the letters, turn off notifications, stop syncing, or leave a jar — each is one row in the app. Back the jar up as a file whenever you like; the file stays in your hands. To delete everything, clear this site’s data in your browser, or remove the home-screen app. Nothing on our side can bring it back, and that is on purpose.

age

jaar is not for children under 13. If you are under 18, ask a parent or guardian before sharing a jar with anyone.

your rights, and how to reach us

Under the GDPR (EU) and the KVKK (Türkiye) you can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, and object to its use. Because we keep almost nothing, the answer is usually the list above, and deletion is in your own hands — but write to us and we will help. The data controller is Egecan Şen, who builds and runs jaar: jar@jaar.day. The legal basis for everything here is the action you took — connecting an address, turning on a knock, opening a jar. We never process data we were not asked to.

This page changes when the app does. The date at the top is the honest one.
